Captain’s Farewell

II’d like to say a few words before I hand the reins over to Martin Richards. I did say when I took over as Captain two years ago that I hoped as Captain to continue the stated objectives of the BTU through continuing to foster a friendly atmosphere and playing at good quality courses. I’ve been very fortunate to be part of a group of individuals who are great company to be with and I certainly have some great memories of the various events we’ve played at. I think we’ve played some great courses and I have thoroughly enjoyed myself in the process.

The highlight of my two years was undoubtably captaining our team to victory at the National last year (I had to mention that again) and I was extremely proud of the team in doing so. Next year we will be defending the trophy at the 2024 National at Old Thorns when it will be organised by the BTU South East and hopefully we will put in a strong performance again.

I can’t depart without thanking the Committee for all the work they have done in making the BTU run smoothly, organising our meetings and making my job a lot easier. Steve Rhodes, our Honorary Secretary, in particular puts in a lot of work in dealing with all aspects of the day-to-day running of the Society. I’m also very grateful to Dave Kendle, Graeme Moss, Steve Shew and Martin Downs for all the work they do. Although we’ve lost a few members over the last couple of years for various reasons we’ve also added some new blood and I think we are in a good position going into 2024 under the guidance of Martin.

I know that Martin is looking at possible venues for next year and will no doubt be in touch with you in the coming months about our schedule for next year. In the meantime thanks for your support over the last two years, have a great Christmas, and hopefully see you all next year.

Best wishes

Mel Wright
