History of The BTU Golfing Society (1926)

This section includes a brief history of the Society since it was founded in 1926, together a history of all Trophies with venues and previous winners, history of Officials and Committee Members and the Rules of the Society.

This record is in recognition of all the members, past and present, and in particular those who have contributed over the years so much to the success of the Society, both on and off the course. Please select from the drop down menus above, for the detailed information.

By 2013 partly due to the recession of the time, most societies were struggling to retain their members. The committee of the day lead by Captain Trevor Perry decided to increase publicly about the Society in trade publication’s and to create our own BTU Website. These actions were undertaken.

Whilst membership did gradually increase the normal degree of attrition due to relocations and other factors saw a gradual reduction of members creating difficulties in booking some courses, and in fielding a team at the National Final.

By 2016 the situation had worsened so incoming Captain Ken Minter carried out a number of studies into the factors affecting membership reduction and recruitment. It became clear there is a clear link between membership and revenue. Without sufficient members the revenue is insufficient to be able to operate as a Society playing quality courses. And with a small group of members we would not be able to book many courses we wish to play the following year.

So increasing membership became our top priority as we entered 2017.

As a result of raising awareness with the membership of the urgent need to increase membership we saw a significant and welcome increase in 2017 which has continued into 2018.

At the AGM of 2018 the Captain sought support for a 6-point plan to put the Society in a healthier position in the future.

This included only the third change to the Handicapping system to make it more acceptable to the regular player and help spread the prizewinners across all handicap levels.

A 4 year rolling high level plan was agreed to provide continuity between Captains and committee members so the important issues remain in focus, and so any actions that may be required can be undertaken in a timely manner.

And a selection process was agreed for those wishing to represent us in the National Final. This is designed to encourage attendance and good scoring at events and aid the selection of the right team for future BTU National Finals.

Sponsorship had become increasingly difficult for all Societies to obtain and actions are being taken to improve this situation.

The Captain encouraged selection of courses that represent different challenges so as to appeal to players of all levels.
