Rules of the BTU National Golf Championship

Below are the outline rules for the National championship, to be developed by the hosting BTU society

1.  General

1.1  The National Championship is to be organised by the Committee of the Host BTU Branch.

1.2  During play, there should be a Referee available to assist in providing rulings on the Rules of Golf. He will be assisted by a number of Observers.

2.  Eligibility

2.1  The Competition is open only to BTU Branches. Each Branch entering the competition shall submit one team of twelve competitors .

2.2  All competitors must be bona fide members of the Branch and must hold a handicap at an affiliated golf club or, in the absence of such a handicap, must hold a valid Certificate of Handicap.

2.3  All competitors shall bring a handicap certificate to the event. The Championship Committee reserves the right to examine any competitor’s certificate at any time during the event.

3.  Entry

3.1  A list of the names of the twelve competitors must be submitted to the Championship Committee no later than May 1st.

4.  Format and Handicap Allowances

4.1  The Competition shall be four-ball stroke play (see rule 31), played to the Stableford scoring  system (see rule 32).

4.2  Play shall be over one stipulated round of 18 holes.

4.3  Each competitor shall receive strokes according to his full playing handicap up to a maximum of 18 strokes.

5.  Times of starting and Groups.

5.1  Groups shall start at the times laid down by the Competition Committee. Competitors are advised to check these times on arrival, in case any late changes to the order of play have been necessary.

5.2  Sides must check in at the Tournament hut at least fifteen minutes before their allotted start time. (It is in the interests of competitors to check in as soon as possible in order to be able to digest the information provided at check in, prior to going to the 1st tee.)

5.3  Sides must be by the 1st tee at least eight minutes before their allotted start time for photographs and briefing by the Starter.

5.4  A side not present to tee off at its allocated time shall be penalised. If only one partner of a side is present, he shall tee off, and his partner shall, on arrival, join at the start of next hole to be played. If both competitors of a side are late, each shall incur a two stroke penalty on the 1st hole and may be moved down the order of play.

5.5  A group shall consist of two sides from different teams. A competitor of one side shall act as Marker to the other side.

6.  Transportation

6.1  Competitors shall walk at all times during the stipulated round. Both competitors in a side shall be penalised for a breach of this rule by either partner. The penalty shall be two strokes at which any breach occurred; maximum penalty four strokes.

6.2  The Championship Committee will consider waiving this rule for a competitor who can provide  medical evidence to its satisfaction that the competitor would be unable to compete without the use of a buggy. The Championship Committee would be notified of any such cases at the time of submitting the team names.

7.  Recording Scores

7.1  Rules 31-4 and 6-6 apply. Completed score cards must be handed to the official scorer within 20 minutes of completion of the round.

8.  Winners

8.1  The winner of the National Championship shall be the team which attains the highest aggregate Stableford points totaled from the four best Stableford points of the 6th side shall be added.

8.2  In the event of a tie, the winning team shall be determined by adding the Stableford points of the next best (5th) side. If a tie still remains, the Stableford points of the 6th side shall be added.

8.3  If a tie still remains, the winning team shall be determined by the Competition Committee using the conventional count-back method across the scores of all six sides.

9.  Local Rules

9.1  A copy of the Local Rules should be issued to each side on checking in.

10.  Suspension of Play

10.1  In the event of severe weather conditions, play may be suspended by the Competition Committee.

10.2  If play cannot be resumed and the competition is abandoned then a winner will be declared only if four sides of every team have completed a minimum of six holes. The winner will be calculated on the maximum holes completed by at least four sides of every team.
